It is a great pleasure and an honor to extend to you a warm welcome to The Annual Conference on Engineering and Applied Science.

Fukuoka is an exceptional location for the conference. Fukuoka is an easy place to visit—it is connected closely to all major airports of Japan, and has direct flights to Seoul, Dalian, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, and Honolulu. Fukuoka Airport (福岡空港, Fukuoka Kūkō) is the fourth busiest airport in Japan. Reached in just five minutes by subway from Hakata Station, it is also one of the most centrally located airports in the country.

Fukuoka was the very first place in Japan that received people from the continent in the first century, and still its local people are lively and kind. Its seafood is often considered the best in Japan.

Fukuoka is one of the oldest places of Japan with very modern parts. Fukuoka city and its neighborhood have many attractive places to visit. On Wednesday, we will have a socializing tour as well. We hope you will join us and take a little extra time to enjoy the spectacular and unique beauty of this region.

Topic :Teaching Professional Dispositions to College Students:What Higher Education Faculty Can Do to Prepare Students for Professional Life

Faculty in accredited teacher preparation programs in the United States are tasked with teaching and assessing the professional dispositions of pre-service teachers. In 2001, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) defined professional dispositions as “values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence practices and behaviors toward students, families, colleagues, and communities and affect student learning, motivation, and development as well as the educator’s own professional growth” (p.30). Pre-service teachers enrolled in accredited teacher preparation programs in the United States must demonstrate these positive behaviors to successfully complete their programs.

Requiring professional dispositions as part of teacher preparation has not been without controversy (Burko, Liston, & Whitcomb, 2007; Villegas, 2007). However, there is a growing body of research that suggests professional dispositions can be taught (Cosgrove & Carpenter, 2012; Marchel, Shields, & Winter, 2011) and are important to the development of effective teachers (Cummins & Asempapa, 2013; Masunaga & Lewis, 2011).

Although the specific responsibilities of teacher preparation faculty may differ, individual faculty have many opportunities, in their various capacities, to teach, model, and support pre-service teacher development of these important professional attributes. In this speech, the presenter will discuss various ways faculty can support learning and development of the professional dispositions among pre-service teachers. In addition, the discussion will be extended to include faculty from other disciplines by giving participants opportunities to discuss ways they address professional dispositions in their respective fields of study.
